Talash: Friend Finding In Federated Social Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
In large online social networks, Friend Recommendation has evolved into an interesting problem. We try to find known acquaintances and new interesting friends on a Federated Social Network (FSN) , using StatusNet as our platform. FSNs are decentralized networks on the internet which can interoperate using the OStatus Suite of protocols. Friend finding on these networks is hard because we do not know the existence of other social networks or Users. We show how Linked Data representation like FOAF can solve this problem. We devise a model for the Federated Network centered around a User and use it to define the problem of Friend Finding. The solution uses two phases, first known as Quick Connect which tries to find old acquaintances. The second phase, Delayed Connect uses the Social Graph of Users to find prospective friends. We show how the FSN information centered around a User can be extracted from FOAF entries and generate new recommendations. We shall illustrate the working of Talash as a part of StatusNet. We experimented on the existing FSN and collected feedback from its Users. The results are encouraging and open new avenues for Friend Finding on the Internet. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of Federated Social Networks and the problem of Friend Finding in them.

Applications of Structural Balance in Signed Social Networks
We present measures, models and link prediction algorithms based on the structural balance in signed social networks. Certain social networks contain, in addition to the usual friend links, enemy links. These networks are called signed social networks. A classical and major concept for signed social networks is that of structural balance, i.e., the tendency of triangles to be balanced towards i...
متن کاملHow is the Semantic Web evolving? A dynamic social network perspective
Finding how the Semantic Web has evolved can help understand the status of Semantic Web community and predict the diffusion of the Semantic Web. One of the promising applications of the Semantic Web is the representation of personal profiles using Friend of a Friend (FOAF). A key characteristic of such social networks is their continual change. However, extant analyses of social networks on the...
متن کاملCircle of Friend Query in Geo-Social Networks
Location-Based Services (LBSs) are becoming more social and Social Networks (SNs) are increasingly including location components. Geo-Social Networks are bridging the gap between virtual and physical social networks. In this paper, we propose a new type of query called Circle of Friend Query (CoFQ) to allow finding a group of friends in a Geo-Social network whose members are close to each other...
متن کاملfinding influential individual in Social Network graphs using CSCS algorithm and shapley value in game theory
In recent years, the social networks analysis gains great deal of attention. Social networks have various applications in different areas namely predicting disease epidemic, search engines and viral advertisements. A key property of social networks is that interpersonal relationships can influence the decisions that they make. Finding the most influential nodes is important in social networks b...
متن کاملSocial Networks and Labor Markets: How Strong Ties Relate to Job Finding On Facebook’s Social Network∗
Social networks are important for finding jobs, but which ties are most useful? Granovetter (1973) suggested that “weak ties” are more valuable than “strong ties,” since strong ties have redundant information, while weak ties have new information. Using six million Facebook users’ data we find evidence for the opposite. We proxy for job help by identifying people who eventually work with a pre-...
